What is the mailbox requirement for Bellingham rental properties?
BMC 6.15.050 - An ordinance requiring locking mailboxes for rental units went into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. During scheduled inspections of rental units, Bellingham Rental Safety Inspectors will check to see that the units have locking mailboxes. They will also check to ensure rental units have locking mailboxes if renters submit code enforcement requests. This requirement is designed to help reduce mail theft, support renters’ financial security, and protect them from identity theft.
BMC 6.15.150 - Any person violating any of the provisions or failing to comply with any of the requirements of this chapter shall have committed a civil infraction and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $200.00 per day for the first 10 days that the violation or failure to comply exists and $500.00 per day for each day thereafter.
Are locking mailboxes USPS approved?

Can a locking mailbox receive packages?
Ourlocking mailboxes receive small packages and medications. For larger items, we'll recommend mailbox models and/or secure package drop boxes.
What happens if I lose the key to my locking mailbox?
If your keys are lost, don’t worry. During installation, we remind customers to record their key serial numbers for easy replacement. You can order replacement keys directly from us or the mailbox manufacturer, pricing is the same either way.
If keys are lost we offer lock rekeying services.

How deep does a mailbox post need to be set?
Typically 24 inches deep in concrete for stability, but it can vary depending on utilitity lines below the surface, soil condition, and maibox location. Call 811 before you dig.
What are the USPS regulations for mailbox placement?
The mailbox should be 41–45 inches above the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry and 6–8 inches from the curb with house or apartment number on the mailbox. We follow all USPS and city guidelines during installation.
